Report: £89m Premier League player was 'devastated' after he missed out on joining Arsenal

Although Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal side have enjoyed a lot of success in the transfer market in recent years, it hasn’t all gone smoothly.

The fact that Arsenal are still trying to shift the likes of Cedric Soares in 2024 demonstrates how short-term thinking was needed at the beginning of Arteta’s project.

In fact, it’s pretty remarkable to think that the likes of Pablo Mari, Ainsley Maitland-Niles and others only left the club permanently this season.

But, in terms of players arriving at the Emirates in the last year or so, recruitment has been pretty flawless.

All of Declan Rice, Kai Havertz and David Raya have had the desired impact this campaign, even if Jurrien Timber hasn’t been able to show his rich ability just yet.

And then the season before, when Arsenal signed the likes of Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko, the club enjoyed similar success.

That being said, Arsenal were thought to be keen on two massive deals during those two seasons, players who eventually ended up at Chelsea.

Moises Caicedo and Mykhailo Mudryk were both linked with recent transfers to Arsenal, and the latter was ‘devastated’ to miss out on that move.

According to a report by The Athletic, North London was Mudryk’s preferred destination, as it seemed clear to fans at the time, and Arsenal then understood that the winger was crestfallen when a move didn’t materialise.

Of course, Mudryk instead joined Chelsea for £89m in January 2023, and hasn’t done much to repay that fee since.

Mudryk’s struggles at Stamford Bridge are well documented, and it’s almost hard not to imagine if things would have been different under Mikel Arteta.

Arteta was thought to be very keen on the transfer, a player he seemingly felt could boost Arsenal’s recent title push.

However, having signed Leandro Trossard as an alternative, there’s probably little regret today.

That being said, the report did mention that Mudryk does still have admirers at Arsenal, who believe his talent can still come to fruition.

But in terms of transfers for the coming summer, Arsenal are said to be keeping a close eye on a young Barcelona star
